Often referred to as compound exercises and used in programs to increase overall strength.
Multipoint movement
Recruits large muscle groups
Examples
Squats
Deadlifts
Bench Press
Assistance Exercises (or lifts)
Often referred to as isolation exercises and used in programs to help prevent injuries and address imbalances.
Single joint movement
Recruits small muscle groups
Examples:
Bicep Curls
Tricep kickbacks
Calf Raises
Most balances training programs include a combination of core and assistance exercises.
